The easy-to-forget bits, straight from the rulebook.
Starting hand
Each player draws 7 cards from their draw deck into their hand to start the game.
Heat cards
Each player typically adds 6 Heat cards to their car.
Stress cards
Each player typically adds 3 Stress cards to their car.
Hand limit
Players draw back up to 7 cards at the end of their turn.
Game end
The game ends when all cars make it to the Finish Line or until the last two cars remain in play.
Tie-breaker
If two or more cars finish in the same round, the winner is the player whose car is furthest ahead (the spot closest to the Race Line is the tiebreaker if two cars end up side by side).
Cannot discard
You can never choose to discard Stress cards or Heat cards.
Draw deck empty
If you must draw or flip cards and there are no cards left in your draw deck, immediately shuffle your discard pile and place it face down as your new draw deck.
To set up the game: 1. Place the game board in the middle of the table, using the USA track for your first game. 2. Each player chooses a color and takes their car, player mat, Gear pawn, 12 Speed cards, and 3 Starting Upgrade cards. 3. Check the game board to determine how many Heat and Stress cards each player must add (typically 6 Heat and 3 Stress cards). 4. Each player places their player mat in front of them. 5. Shuffle your 12 Speed cards, 3 Starting Upgrade cards, and 3 Stress cards together to form your draw deck, placing it facedown on your player mat's left spot. 6. Place the 6 Heat cards faceup on the Engine spot in the middle of your player mat. 7. Place your Gear pawn in first gear. 8. Place the remaining Stress cards faceup close to the board as a reserve. 9. Randomly place all participating race cars on the starting grid one at a time, filling the spots in ascending order to determine player order for the first round. 10. Draw 7 cards from your draw deck into your hand. These are the cards available for the first round.
On your turn in Heat: Pedal to the Metal, you always complete four mandatory steps as part of a round: 1. **Adjust your gear [GEAR]**: You can choose to leave your gear as is, shift it one gear up, or one gear down. You can also shift your gear two positions up or down, but this will require taking one Heat card. 2. **Play cards [PLAYCARDS]**: You play a number of cards from your hand determined by your current gear (e.g., 1st gear means 1 card, 2nd gear means 2 cards). These cards are placed facedown in your Play Area. 3. **Move your car [MOVE]**: This step occurs once all players have completed steps 1 and 2, and players take turns moving their cars. The active player reveals the cards they played, adds their values to determine their speed, and moves their car forward by that many Spaces on the track. 4. **Draw back up to seven cards [DRAWCARD]**. Steps 1 and 2 are completed by all players at the same time. Steps 3 through 9 (which includes step 4: draw cards) are completed one player at a time, starting with the frontmost car.

You win the game by being the first player to cross the finish line after completing the number of laps indicated on the board. The overall object of the game is to race your car around the track for a specified number of laps to determine the best driver. If multiple cars cross the finish line in the same round: * The winner is the player whose car is furthest ahead. * If two cars end up side by side, the [SPOT] closest to the [RACELINE] is the tiebreaker. * Slipstreaming is not allowed when crossing the finish line. Once cars cross the finish line, they are removed from the track and placed in order on the Hall of Fame. Play continues until all cars have made it to the finish line.
