How to play
Grounded in Just One's rulebook — cite-checked answers, not guesses.
Get a straight answer with the exact rulebook passage to back it up.
The easy-to-forget bits, straight from the rulebook.
Starting cards
13 cards are randomly drawn to create the face-down deck.
Game end
The game ends when the deck of cards is empty.
Identical clues
Variants from the same word family (e.g., Prince and Princess) and variants of the same word (e.g., plurals, gender differentiations, spelling mistakes) are considered identical clues.
Wrong guess
If the active player makes a wrong guess, the Mystery word card AND the top card of the deck are returned to the game box.
Wrong guess last turn
If the player gives a wrong guess during the final turn, also remove a card previously guessed successfully.
Skip turn
If the active player chooses not to answer and skips their turn, the Mystery word card is returned to the game box.
3 players setup
With 3 players, each player takes two easels during setup and provides 2 clues instead of a single one.
Invalid clues
Invalid clues include the Mystery word written differently, in a foreign language, a word from the same family as the Mystery word, an invented word, or a word phonetically identical to the Mystery word but with a different meaning.
Here's how to set up the game: 1. **Prepare the cards:** Shuffle the 110 cards and draw 13 of them to create a face-down deck in the middle of the table. The rest of the cards are returned to the box and not used for the current game. 2. **Distribute components:** Each player receives an easel and an erasable felt marker. * **3-player variant:** If playing with 3 players, each player takes two easels instead of one. 3. **Choose first player:** Randomly select a player to be the first active player. The game then proceeds in a series of turns, ending when the card deck is empty.
On your turn as the active player, you will: * Draw the top card of the deck without looking at it, and place it on your easel so other players can see the words. * Choose a number between 1 and 5 to indicate which Mystery word the other players need to provide a clue for. If you don't know the chosen word, you can ask to choose a different number. * Close your eyes while other players compare their clues. * Open your eyes and try to guess the Mystery word using the remaining clues. You are allowed only one guess. * You can also choose not to answer and skip your turn.
Just One is a cooperative party game where all players work together to achieve the best score. You win by getting a high score, which is determined by the number of successfully guessed Mystery words by the end of the game. The game ends when the deck of cards is empty. After the game ends, you count your successfully guessed cards and compare your total to a table to get your score. For example, 13 successful cards is a "Perfect score!".

Scoring in Just One works as follows: * The game is cooperative, and all players work together to get the best score. * At the end of the game, when the deck of cards is empty, you tally your score. * Your score is based on the number of Mystery words that were successfully guessed. * If the active player correctly guesses a Mystery word, that card is placed face up next to the deck. These are the "successfully guessed cards" or "Mystery words found" that count towards your score. * If a guess is wrong or a turn is skipped, cards are removed from the game, reducing the potential number of successful guesses. If a wrong guess is made during the final turn, a previously successfully guessed card is also removed. * You compare the total number of successfully guessed cards with a table to determine your final score. For example: * 13 successful cards = Perfect score! * 12 successful cards = Incredible! * 11 successful cards = Awesome! * 9-10 successful cards = Wow, not bad at all! * 7-8 successful cards = You're in the average. * 4-6 successful cards = That's a good start. * 0-3 successful cards = Try again, and again, and again.
The game ends when the deck of cards is empty. At the end of the game, you count the number of successfully guessed cards. Your total is then compared to a table to determine your final score.
